The one, two, buckle my shoe printable includes 11 pages of fun worksheets:

An Engaging Print of the Song Lyrics

This full page printable is perfect for a bulletin board display or as handouts to send home with the student.

It has large, clear wording to make it easy for reading comprehension, and has fun pictures to go along with the rhyme.

Hang this page up and frequently recite the shoe rhyme to help the student remember it quickly – before long they will be singing and dancing right along with you! This counting song encourages the student to remember numbers along with rhyming pairs.

Encourage the student to take their copy home and hang up so they can practice the poem regularly.

Complete the Rhyme Pages

This worksheet set includes two pages of practice exercises to complete the last word in each sentence of the poem. One page has the last word in dotted tracing lines, and the other page has the last word blank for the student to fill in.

Feel free to use whichever page works best for your group of students!

Match the Numbers to the Correct Picture Worksheet

This page in the printable pack instructs the student to draw a line matching the numbers to whichever picture it belongs to in the nursery rhyme. (1, 2 to image of a shoe, 3, 4 to image of a door, and so forth πŸ™‚ )

Hen in the Chicken Coop Coloring Page

The printable pack includes a special coloring page for the student to enjoy. It includes a fun drawing of the famous big fat hen and her chicken coop.

This is a great activity to complete the nursery rhymes unit by encouraging thoughtful discussion of the poem. Talk through the different aspects of the song lyrics, what the child liked most about it, what words rhyme, etc. while the student works on coloring in the page.

Matching Game

Pages 6-8 include cards to cut out and play a matching game with your students. After reading through the poem a few times, give them these cards to independently match the correct numbers to pictures.

This is a great time to discuss the rhyming words in the poem while having a visual example in front of them.

Cards for Popsicle Stick Activity

This fun activity is located on pages 9-11 in the worksheet packet. There are 5 large cards to cut out with the pictures from the song on each one. I recommend doing this activity right after reading the poem for the first time and before singing it together as a class.

Have your students cut these out and glue each one to a popsicle stick. Then sing the song again and have students hold up the correct pictures for each part of the song.

There are hardly any special materials needed for this set! Once you print out the packet, all the child needs is a pencil to complete the poem sentences, crayons for the coloring sheet, and popsicles for the cut out pictures.

If you have access to a laminator, I recommend laminating the poster with the poem on it so it will last a long time in your classroom/home. But totally not necessary if you don’t have one.

This nursery rhyme teaches skills that include:

  • Memorizing numbers through repetition and fun rhymes
  • Learn phonemic awareness through rhyming pairs and words that children can directly relate to in their everyday life
  •  Advancing language development

The history of the One, Two Buckle My Shoe nursery rhyme

This nursery rhyme has been around since at least 1805, when Walter Crane put it in print form for the first time. (But researchers suspect that it is much older!). A similar rhyme can also be found in several other languages such as Italian, German, and Turkish. (source) There are several different versions of this song, and at one time it is believed that it went up to 30. (source) One of the special things about this nursery rhyme is that it has no historical references. It is simply a counting rhyme to help young children learn their numbers, while describing everyday work in the 18th century.

Other versions can include:

3, 4 knock at the door (or open the door)

9, 10 begin again (or a good fat hen)
