Do you have a ton of leftover breastmilk in the freezer? Or maybe milk that is high lipase or expired? Don’t throw it out! Checkout this quick and easy breastmilk lotion recipe below to put all your ‘liquid gold’ to good use.
When my daughter was born, I wanted to make sure that I had plenty of extra milk in the freezer so I would pump extra and try to save back a few ounces every day. It worked out great! Then at 4 months old, she decided that bottles and pacifiers were the devil. 😉
SO, we exclusively breastfed after that and soon I found myself with a lot of extra milk in the freezer that I wasn’t sure what to do with.
I donated some, gave my kids milk baths, made popsicles for when she was teething, and I even started making lotion out of it! Turns out it has a lot of amazing benefits that regular lotion just can’t beat, goes on smooth like butter, and is completely natural for your baby’s sensitive skin.
So you may ask:
WHAT is actually in breastmilk lotion?!
All Natural Ingredients
Coconut Oil (or read below for more options if you don’t have it on hand!)
For your homemade breast milk lotion, you’ll want to use a carrier oil that nourishes and absorbs into the skin well.
Below are some options that you may have on hand:
Coconut Oil – This is my personal favorite for this recipe because coconut oil naturally solidifies once it gets cold, so you don’t have to worry about your lotion separating if it sits for a day or two. Coconut oil also contains fatty acids (like lauric acid) which help repair dry/cracked skin and has antimicrobial properties.
Beef Tallow – Another great option! Tallow contains conjugated linoleic acid which protects the skin barrier and reduces inflammation. It doesn’t clog pores and since it is animal fat, it absorbs easily into the skin.
Grapeseed Oil – This oil contains vitamin E which will help with inflammation and is great for hydrating the skin! It can even lighten scars on the skin due to the antioxidants in the oil.
Some other great options:
Jojoba Oil
Sweet Almond Oil
Olive Oil
Vitamin E Oil
Adding vitamin E oil to the DIY breastmilk lotion is a fantastic way to get some extra moisturizing benefits and help with skin elasticity. It is a great way to heal minor skin irritations with it’s anti-inflammatory properties as well.
Beeswax
I love adding beeswax to this simple recipe because of all of its amazing benefits. We could be here all day talking about beeswax because there are so many great things about it! It is a natural hardening agent, so it will help your lotion set up in the jar. It is waterproof so it protects the skin’s barrier and prevents moisture loss – plus it is great for preventing any irritations on baby’s skin (like diaper rash!).
It naturally calms itchy dry skin, helps with elasticity, hydrates and soothes – I could go on and on. 🙂
Beeswax pellets are best to use in this case since they melt quicker. However, I only had the ‘logs’ on hand so I just cut it up in pretty small pieces before putting it in the glass bowl to melt.
Essential Oils
This is a completely optional ingredient, but a great way to add scent to your lotion without having to deal with any artificial fragrances.
Lavender, rosewood, or frankincense are all great options that not only smell amazing, but also have healing qualities as well.
Breastmilk
And last but certainly not least… the star of the show! The benefits of breast milk could fill up an entire book. (Seriously!)
Not even touching on all the benefits of breastfeeding itself, breastmilk on the skin has many uses as well. It is antibacterial so it can be a form of relief for ear infections, cradle cap, baby acne, help calm allergic reactions, heal pink eye… It truly is the miracle liquid!
Supplies needed to make your own breast milk lotion
Along with the ingredients listed above, you will need:
A Double Boiler
Having a double boiler on hand is awesome, especially if you like to make homemade pies.. (but that’s another topic for another time 😉 )
But if you DON’T have one, don’t worry! You can also heat up some water in a larger saucepan and put your lotion ingredients in a glass bowl or mason jar. That is what I used for this recipe to show how easy it is to use.
Small Glass Jars
Once your lotion is cooled down and all mixed together, you’ll need something to store it in. I love these amber glass jars, the 4 oz size is perfect and the quality has been great. This recipe makes two 4 oz jars.
How to Make Breastmilk Lotion
Step 1 – Combine oil and beeswax to melt
Step 2 – Once melted, allow mixture to cool to room temp before adding other ingredients

Step 4 – Pour into glass jars and immediately place in refrigerator

Ingredients
- 1 TBSP Beeswax
- 8 TBSPs Carrier Oil of Choosing(read above for different options you can choose!)
- 8 Drops Vitamin E Oil
- 4 oz Room Temperature Breast Milk
- 10-12 Drops Essential Oils (Optional)
Instructions
Step 1 - Combine oil & beeswax to melt. Grab your double boiler or glass bowl and combine the beeswax with your carrier oil of choice (such as coconut oil, olive oil, tallow, etc.). Melt that down over medium high heat while stirring frequently. The beeswax will take a minute to melt!
Step 2 - After melting, set the bowl aside and let the oil come down to room temperature before adding the other ingredients. This is VERY IMPORTANT. It will destroy the breast milk’s beneficial properties if the oil is too hot, so you want it around room temp before adding in.
Step 3 - When the oil gets to room temp, go ahead and add in the vitamin e oil, breastmilk, and essential oils if using. Use a whisk to stir everything together well.
Step 4 - Pour the cooled mixture into two 4 oz glass jars and immediately put in the fridge to continue cooling down and solidifying. It is ready to use! Store in the fridge for up to 3 months.
Notes
1.) In order to keep the lotion from separating, I recommend placing it in the fridge immediately after pouring into the jars to fully solidify.
2.) If the carrier oil used is one that normally stays in liquid form (like jojoba oil or olive oil), it may always separate a little bit anyways and that’s okay! Just take it out of the fridge for a little while and shake good before use.
3.) I don’t recommend mixing this breastmilk lotion recipe with an electric mixer. I have tried to make a ‘whipped lotion’ version of this in the past and the milk always separates from the rest of the ingredients, making it really hard to stay combined.

I am making this tonight for my fiancé. He has psoriasis so I’m really hoping this will help him! I also just put straight breast milk on my baby’s head and face so excited to try this out on him too. Thanks for the recipe!
That is so good to hear, I hope that it helps him! Thanks for stopping by, Becca 🙂
If I use tallow do I need to put it in the refrigerator? I use tallow lotion now and I don’t do that .
Tallow by itself is fine left out, but with breastmilk would need to go in the fridge to keep it from spoiling 🙂
Hi Kara!
Thanks for sharing your recipe! I just have 1 question. Is it reaĺly only 1 tbsp of beeswax over 8 of oil? I want to make it but first to confirm the ingredients
Hi Renee! Yes, that is correct – only 1 tbsp of beeswax for the 8 of oil. Let me know how it goes! 🙂
How do I thicken the lotion up? I’ve just took it off the double boiler now and waiting to add the milk and essential oils. But it’s pure liquid.
Thank you
Hi Laura,
With the oil and beeswax used, it will naturally thicken up as the liquid cools. 🙂
