DIY Small Baby Closet Ideas (Nursery Organization Tips)

DIY Small Baby Closet Ideas (Nursery Organization Tips)

Struggling to figure out a closet system for all of baby’s things? Follow along to see the best DIY small baby closet ideas that are not only functional, but affordable to create.

Before building (or if you’re like me, putting in an Amazon order! 🙂 ), go ahead and sit down with your husband to figure out what features you both want the closet space to have.

But before you do that, you’ll need to make a list of what all will need to be stored. That way you can make a closet layout to best suit the items you have. Remember to not just remember the newborn stage, but also what you’ll need to store back in 6 months, a year, etc.

Doing this now will save you time in the long run so you are not having to stop mid project and figure out where you need everything to go.

Baby Items You May Want to Store in Closet

  • Outfits for baby
  • Extra diapers
  • Seasonal items (things like car seat cover, Halloween costume, or swim diapers)
  • Extra toiletries for baby such as diaper cream, lotion, and other small items.
  • Toys or books that your baby might not be quite ready for.
  • Extra baby gear
  • Laundry bin
  • Stroller attachments that you’re not using at the moment
  • Special keepsakes such as hospital hat and blanket, baby book, baby’s little blood pressure cuff… Trust me, you’ll want to keep it ALL 😉
  • Extra crib sheets or blankets.

After you get a good list together of what baby stuff you’ll need to store, now is the time to figure out what layout would work best. Below is a list of features you may want included in your new closet.

Features You May Want in Your Baby’s Closet

  • Closet dividers
  • Top shelf above clothing rod
  • Easy access to certain items
  • Extra shelving for seasonal items
  • Area at bottom to store larger items
  • Double rod to separate out clothing
  • Space for toy storage
  • Cube storage for smaller items
  • Space for small dresser
  • Wooden bins to store books, toys, or shoes

Okay, we’re making good progress! Now that we have what we need and how we want them stored, now comes the fun part. Let’s dive into the great small nursery closet examples below.

Try to look at each example and figure out what you like and don’t care for. Then as you’re going, start piecing together what you’d like your closet to look like based on what features you favor in the examples!

Best DIY Small Baby Closet Ideas

Plenty of storage – both in closet AND on the door

Looking to take your small space and turn it into an organized closet? This is a perfect example. The shelves on the door give you extra space to store smaller items like wipes, burp cloths, or lotion. The convenience of having items right there (and not having to dig for them!) really helps.

I also really love the cubby shelves near the floor for toys and book storage as your baby grows.

Double rods, cube storage, and an adorable display on the door for all of baby girl’s bows

Every person who has ever had a little girl has probably had the dilemma of WHERE TO STORE ALL THE BOWS. They seem to accumulate SO quick and the headbands are so awkward to keep organized.

This closet door rod for bows is the perfect solution to hang up the mountain of bows and headbands you have stored in a bin somewhere. Now they can be displayed clearly, and you can check to see what colors you don’t have yet… And buy some more! (Not speaking from personal experience at all 😉 ).

Cube storage with plenty of rods for all the tiny baby clothes

nursery closet with cubed shelving and four clothing rods, two on each side, for clothing

This small closet puts a unique spin on traditional spaces with the cube organizer separating the clothing rods. This would be hands down the best way to separate clothing out by sizes or seasons!

Store all of baby’s extra items in fabric or plastic bins like blankets, socks/mittens, or even burp cloths.

Practical space for all your baby essentials

This small space seems to have hit the nail on the head of what may need to be stored away for your baby, and the solution on how to get it all to fit!

Inevitably, I always have clothes to stash away somewhere that one of my kids has outgrown. So I really like this idea of putting two bins on the upper shelf for next size up and outgrown clothes!

The plastic drawer set is a great option if you need more drawer space (which I always do!) on an affordable budget.

Freestanding wardrobe in baby’s room

Once upon a time, when closets weren’t really a thing in homes yet… (I know, I know. Whatttttttttt.) Armoires were very popular.

For those who have very limited closet space, a wardrobe like this one would be a perfect option! They house plenty of space for your sweet babe’s items, and are such an adorable addition to a nursery.

You can also check Facebook Marketplace if you are looking to buy an armoire. I’ve seen several antique ones pop up that are very beautiful and affordable!

Bookcase converted into a small closet for baby – Perfect for those tight on space!

A dedicated area within the nursery for a couple sets of shelves would be a great option if your new baby is sharing a room with you or a sibling.

It is such a good idea to add a rod to a bookcase for clothing storage! Plus everything is right there nearby if baby is on the changing table.

Double hanging rod with a bottom shelf

My kids share a small closet, so the main purpose of it for us is clothing storage. The example above is very similar to what we have set up with the double rods!

I love storing their clothing this way because it is so easy to keep it separated out, and we can really get a lot of outfits packed in there.

The shelves above each clothing rod would be a perfect area to store any accessories or shoes that your baby has!

Nursery dresser with shelving and clothing rod converted into baby’s ‘closet’

picture showing corner of baby's room with a white dresser and a shelf above it with a clothing rod attached. Several clothing items are hanging on rod.

This is another great idea to do if you do not have a dedicated space to store baby’s things.

You can really customize this area of the room and add your own touches to help it feel cozy and warm. You could also add a changing pad on top of the dresser to have everything right there!

But don’t forget the big bin of stuffed animals.

Because every baby needs a big bin of stuffed animals. 😉

The perfect nursery closet storage setup

picture of nursery closet with a large plastic drawer set and a clothing rod with several outfits hanging on a shelf at the top.

This closet organizer is a great way to store all of baby’s essentials without having to worry about building anything or putting a big piece of furniture together.

Add some shelves, a rod going across, some clear storage bins, and you’re all set!

Have everything close at hand with a drawer unit

picture of a nursery closet with a full length organizer hanging on the door, metal wire drawer system at the bottom of closet, a clothing rod and shelf at the top with several outfits hanging up.

This closet is perfectly organized with several different sizes of storage room.

I love the easy storage access on the door (I mean, who doesn’t love the adorable place to hang up all of baby’s pacifiers!). The drawer set in the closet provides great storage for bigger items, leaving additional room on the floor as well.

Montessori inspired dresser with changing table on top

A Montessori inspired wardrobe is one of my favorite ways to store baby’s items if you don’t have a closet available! It is such a cute way to display baby’s clothes, plus everything is at a lower level so your little one will be encouraged to independently use it as he or she grows.

I love the changing pad on top of the dresser, so everything is close at hand during those first few months.

The most adorable baby closet space with hidden shelves to the side

picture of a nursery closet with a clothing rod going across at the top with a shelf for storage. To the right are 3 shelves tucked into the empty space between the two walls.

Source

This small closet has plenty of good storage space with a dresser drawer set, clothing rod, a long shelf that goes across the top, PLUS a hidden set of shelves to the side of the closet.

This would normally be unused space since it is in such an awkward spot, but these shelves are perfect for it and provide so much extra room… especially for crib sheets, blankets, or even a laundry basket near the floor!

The sweetest vintage inspired ‘closet’

picture of a repurposed vintage white wardrobe with glass in front. inside the wardrobe are several outfits hung up to store a baby's closet items

Source Unknown

Get a vintage farmhouse look immediately by using something like this as baby’s new closet. Not only is it completely adorable, but would also be very budget friendly to repurpose and get the look you want. Such a great idea and so sweet.

If you are looking for a cabinet similar to this make sure to check out Facebook Marketplace, local second hand shops, or estate auctions to score one reasonably priced!

You can repurpose an old cabinet in so many different ways that you are sure to bring a vision to life that you love!

Ikea unit wardrobe hack

Another Montessori inspired wardrobe for the win! This clothing storage option can easily be used for baby clothing OR for older toddlers when they want to start picking out their own clothes.

These units would be perfect to add to your baby shower registry list and that would be one less thing to have to worry about!

Nursery theme inspired closet organizer

picture of a nursery showing a teepee inspired clothing rod, and books in two shelves on the wall.

Source Unknown

Can you tell that I’m obsessed with freestanding wardrobe closets yet? I’m sorry but they are all just so cute – especially this kids teepee style clothing rack! Who needs a walk-in closet when you have a storage area that goes so well with your nursery theme?!

Store all of baby’s clothes on this Montessori inspired teepee if you are short on closet space and place crates at the bottom for any extra items that need a home.

The perfect space saving closet

picture of a nursery closet with a dresser and changing table inside of it, and a clothing rod at the top with additional storage

Source

Put a small dresser with a changing area on top to really maximize the space in the nursery! The best part about this closet is how everything is at arm’s length. Need diaper cream? Right there on the shelf. Baby has a blow out and needs an entire new outfit? Everything is right there and easy to grab!

TWO Printable Chore Charts for Kids (FREE DOWNLOAD 2024)

TWO Printable Chore Charts for Kids (FREE DOWNLOAD 2024)

Giving your child household chores at a young age is one of the best things that you can do for them. It instills good work ethic and builds a sense of responsibility that will stay with them for their whole life! Check out these two free printable chore charts for 8 year old’s below, and read further to find out some great tips for implementing this into your daily routine.

These printable chore charts are not only a perfect solution for little ones but also older kids as well!

graphic of 2 printable chore charts for kids

What are the benefits of giving your child household responsibilities at a young age?

Boost their confidence and self-esteem

Involving younger kids in your household cleaning operation will not only help them feel a part of the team, but also gives them insight on how the house is actually run. This is such an important skill to learn and will go with them as they grow up and eventually move out on their own!

A great way to encourage them to help out with daily tasks

Use this chore chart system to involve your young children to start helping out with the daily (sometimes mundane!) tasks that keep your household going. Sometimes as a mom, it gets overwhelming real quick at how many different things need to be done throughout the day.

Walk the dog, do laundry, clean up the dried play-doh on the table from last night, clean up the spilled juice in the fridge, etc etc etc 😉

Have your child help out with some of the easier tasks that need to get done to help save your sanity, mama. It is good for their character and good for your soul to have some breathing room – just all around a win-win situation!

Sense of accomplishment

By having a clear set of responsibilities to complete on a daily basis, your child will soon realize how good it feels to be productive in this way and have an important part in the household systematics.

Setting clear expectations

Having clear expectations on what your child needs to complete for the day will set them up for success so that there is no doubt or confusion when it comes to ‘who does what’ in the house.

Prepare them for the ‘real world’ and develop good habits early on

Giving your child some household duties at an early age will help them so much and stay with them for a lifetime! The earlier that good habits are established, the easier they are to maintain and will just become a part of them as your child grows up.

This is a perfect time to talk with your child about how keeping up with these good habits can play a huge role in mental health. Helps lower stress levels, a more relaxing environment, makes your home a more joyful place to be, etc.

Encourage these open conversations with your child so that they can recognize the importance of keeping a tidy home.

Best way to introduce chores to children (and it not be like pulling teeth!)

Giving your child a list of chores can seem daunting, especially if they are unfamiliar with household tasks. But it doesn’t have to be scary or intimidating!

Start small

Before diving head first into the world of responsibility (because ew, who REALLY wants responsibility right?! 😉 ), start small and test the waters for a few days with a few tasks. You don’t want to overwhelm your child because then they will quickly put the brakes on and may shut down on you before you’re able to get any traction for a routine to be put in place.

Give simple tasks at first

Things that we do everyday without thinking may be overwhelming to little kids if they’re not used to doing them, so make sure to give easy, specific tasks when first starting the chore routine.

Ask them to do simple tasks like clearing the table after dinner, taking the trash out, or starting a load of laundry… Shoutout to the kids like my son who is OBSESSED with helping with laundry. If I could just get him as excited to pick up his toys as he gets when pouring the laundry soap into the machine, that would be GREAT. 😉

Get the entire family involved

Start a daily routine that involves everyone in the family getting involved. Try to do this at specific times of the day to make it easier to stick to and give a clear expectation for your child. This can look like different things for different families such as:

  • If everyone gets up in the morning at the same time, have each member of the family spend some time first thing making their bed.
  • After each meal have one child clear the dishes while another washes, and another puts away, etc.
  • Each member of the family is responsible for one animal in the family (works best if you live on a farm and have multiple animals to care for).
  • Do a nightly reset with your family – have each member take a room and do a quick 10 minute reset. Pick up any toys or clothes, fold blankets left out, do a quick floor sweep, etc.

Establish a reward system (This might be the most motivating factor! 😉 )

Nothing, I repeat, NOTHING will motivate your child more than a special reward to look forward to! This can be as simple as letting your kid pick out some ice cream at the store, or you can have them work up to a bigger goal – like a zoo trip or purchase of a new bike.

Whatever it may be, your child is sure to catch on quickly to the new chore system and even have enthusiasm towards it!

What is included in these free kids’ chore charts?

Two different designs to enjoy

Two unique designs are included in this free printable making it perfect for either boy or girl. A space at the top of each page is included for your child’s name.

Daily Chores Section

This section allows enough space to write in up to 7 daily tasks for your child to complete.

To the right of this section includes a place to mark off the task after it is completed each day (a perfect place to put stickers!).

Weekly Chores Section

On the second page there are 7 spaces to write in a weekly chore list, with a place to mark off or add a sticker when completed.

Goals & Reward Section

This section may be the most important one of the entire chart ;). Write in a set goal that the child must complete that week, and what reward they will get if completed. This gives not only a clear direction of what is expected, but also something that will motivate and give your child something to look forward to after completing their tasks!

graphic of 2 printable chore charts for kids

How to use the weekly chore chart with your child

The best thing that I can recommend before implementing this chore chart is to include your child when filling it out!

Write down a separate list of important tasks that need to get done in the house daily, and encourage your child to pick out a few that they are interested in.

Then figure out the ones that might be ‘less important’ but still need to be done weekly, and have your child pick out a few of those.

Discuss the goal you have in mind for the new chore chart and write it in the goal section. Talk about the possibility of doing any extra chores and what that would mean for rewards. Figure out what the reward will be at the end of the week, (I’m sure your child will have lots of ideas at this point 😉 )

The smell of rain after it thunderstorms,

The first morning of summer after the last day of school,

Or knowing you just met your very best friend.

All of these simple joys are the greatest gifts in life.

I pray that we never forget these blessings,

And never let life get too busy for them.

Thank You Lord Jesus for Your love,

And such joy.

Amen.

So that I may walk in Your path

And show others the love that You give so freely.

Thank you for this life, and your guidance in everything I do.

Amen.

20.) The Good Friends Prayer

Dear Lord,

Thank You for this meal shared with good friends.

I pray that You will bless each person sitting at this table,

With Your love and secure protection.

Help us walk in the light of Your path,

And to keep a lifelong friendship with You.

Let our love for You shine brightly,

So that others may see Your goodness.

Bless this food before us,

And let us enjoy fellowship together.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

21.) An Easter Prayer

Dear Father,

Thank You for this powerful gift,

That You loved us so much to give.

Help us remember the hope

That lives in Christ Jesus

And let us walk with a new light

Or sight

And think back to the day

That Jesus paid the price

So that we could gain eternal life.

In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.

22.) A Christmas Prayer

Dear Lord,

Thank You for this special time of year

When we remember our Savior’s birthday.

Help us to remember the real reason we are here.

Not the presents, or snow, or even the good cheer.

But for the little baby born in a barn,

That would later save the world

And give us a bright, new hope for life after ‘here’.

Thank You for this gift,

Help us use it well

Let all who know us know Him

And that, that is truly GOOD CHEER.

Amen.

23.) A New Year Prayer

Dear God,

As the New Year comes quickly,

Help us remember You firstly.

I pray that no matter what transpires in the next year,

We keep you at the center

And the fruits of the spirit.

Let new people walk into our lives,

Ones that we can witness to

And ones that we can grow from.

No matter what,

Let each of us walk directly in Your path,

For Your glory.

Please keep us safe,

And protect our hearts.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

24.) A Perfect Lunch Prayer

Dear God,

Thank You for this time to sit down

And enjoy this meal together.

Thank You for always having our best interests at heart,

And having a warm embrace

When life gets tough.

Please forgive our sins

And help us to always speak love.

Help us use this day for Your good work,

And let Your will be done.

Please protect each of us throughout the day.

Thank you, Lord, for this lunch.

Amen.

25.) A Thanksgiving Prayer

Dear God,

Thank You for this day,

And for time spent with those we love.

Thank You for the beautiful outdoors,

And for the simple things that make us smile.

Thank You for our work to do good things,

And for the hope that you give in each circumstance.

Thank You for Your friendship,

And loving reminders that You send us.

Thank You for the special people that walk in our life.

Thank You for the lessons that You teach along the way.

Help us to always use Your work for good.

Thank you for this meal before us,

Amen.

26.) School’s Out Prayer

Dear Lord,

Thank You for a successful year in school,

And for always keeping my best interests in mind.

Through ups and downs,

I always know that You are near.

Thank You for the everlasting comfort that You provide.

Help me use this summer for You.

Help me spread the good news,

And help those in need without question.

Let me stay patient with those I love,

And peace with the life that I live.

Thank You for this day, the meal before me,

And the summer ahead!

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

27.) The Best Day Prayer

Dear God,

Thank You for the best day ever.

You are such a kind and loving God,

Thank You for Your many blessings.

I pray that throughout this day and everyday,

I will always live for you,

Depend on you for guidance,

And spread the good news about you.

Let my heart be forever grateful

For the price that Jesus paid

So that I may have eternal life with You.

Thank You for the best day,

And everyday that I get to be your child.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

28.) All of God’s Creatures Prayer

Dear Lord,

Thank You for all the creatures that roam this earth.

From the cuddliest, fluffiest puppy

To the smallest flying bug.

They are all Your creatures,

And for that we are blessed.

Help us all be good keepers of the earth,

Including each living thing on it.

Let love be what leads us

And always help when there is trouble.

I pray that each animal on this earth

Feels loved and safe today,

And knows that You are their God.

Thank You for the blessings that animals are!

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

How to Use These Prayers Before Meals for Kids

Incorporating these mealtime prayers into your daily routine is easy, and use in multiple ways.

One of the ways is to have the child pick out one that they resonate with that day, have them recite it, and that counts as the daily mealtime prayer.

Another way is to have the parent pick out a prayer, read it, then have the child to say a prayer afterwards based on what they picked out as important from the prayer.

You can also pick out just one prayer for week. This will help the child really remember it, know it’s meaning, and understand what they’re praying about.

Or, you can pick a new one out each day to change things up with something new.

Do what works best for you and your child!

Where To Say These Prayers

These prayers are perfect to add into your daily routine at any mealtime, and also for group events like:

  • A special occasion (like family visiting, or holiday event)
  • Family prayer time (or Devotion time)
  • Preschool class (or Sunday school)

A lot of these aren’t just limited to mealtimes either! You can easily say these with your child at bedtimes, in the car, in the morning after waking up, etc.

I hope you and your family enjoy these prayers, I sure had a great time putting these together.

Memorization Tips to Learn the Ten Commandments King James Version Bible

To quickly learn the Ten Commandments, I recommend hanging this PDF up in your home where you will easily see it each day. Every time it catches your eye, go through each verse and see how many you can remember without looking back at it. You’ll be amazed by how quickly you pick up on the memory verses!

A Cool and Effective Memory Trick (Read Below!)

This simple yet powerful teaching tool is not just limited to kids (but definitely show them this too!). It involves holding up different fingers that represent certain parts of God’s Commandments. Try it out:

1. Hold up one finger – representing one God. Wag it back and forth while saying “no other gods before me.”

2. Hold up the pointer fingers on each hand, and bow down one finger to the other. This represents “Do not bow to or make idols.”

3. Next, hold up the first three fingers to make a ‘W’ – which means “Watch your words: don’t take God’s name in vain.”

4. Take the pointer finger and thumb of each hand and bring together to make a church steeple. This stands for “Remember the Sabbath day and to keep it holy.”

5. Take all 5 fingers and salute for a “Yes, sir” – to obey your parents.

6. Using three fingers, make a gun with your pointer finger, middle finger, and thumb. This represents “Do not kill.”

7. Hold up two fingers on the left hand, and five on the right. This means “There are two people in a marriage, not five. Don’t commit adultery.”

8. Hold up four fingers on each hand and make prison bars over the eyes: “Stealing can mean jail – do not steal.”

9. Hold up four fingers on the left and five on the right. This means “$4 is not $5, do not lie.”

10. Take all ten fingers and wave them towards yourself (like you’re wanting something). This signifies “Do not want what others have, do not covet.”

Isn’t that such a neat way to learn the Ten Commandments? This is also perfect for kids, as it connects each verse to an action making it way easier to remember long term.

Exodus 20

King James Version

20 And God spake all these words, saying,

2 I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;

6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.

7 Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.

9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:

10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:

11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

12 Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.

13 Thou shalt not kill.

14 Thou shalt not commit adultery.

15 Thou shalt not steal.

16 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.

17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s.

18 And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they removed, and stood afar off.

19 And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear: but let not God speak with us, lest we die.

20 And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not.

21 And the people stood afar off, and Moses drew near unto the thick darkness where God was.

22 And the Lord said unto Moses, Thus thou shalt say unto the children of Israel, Ye have seen that I have talked with you from heaven.

23 Ye shall not make with me gods of silver, neither shall ye make unto you gods of gold.

24 An altar of earth thou shalt make unto me, and shalt sacrifice thereon thy burnt offerings, and thy peace offerings, thy sheep, and thine oxen: in all places where I record my name I will come unto thee, and I will bless thee.

25 And if thou wilt make me an altar of stone, thou shalt not build it of hewn stone: for if thou lift up thy tool upon it, thou hast polluted it.

26 Neither shalt thou go up by steps unto mine altar, that thy nakedness be not discovered thereon.

The one, two, buckle my shoe printable includes 11 pages of fun worksheets:

An Engaging Print of the Song Lyrics

This full page printable is perfect for a bulletin board display or as handouts to send home with the student.

It has large, clear wording to make it easy for reading comprehension, and has fun pictures to go along with the rhyme.

Hang this page up and frequently recite the shoe rhyme to help the student remember it quickly – before long they will be singing and dancing right along with you! This counting song encourages the student to remember numbers along with rhyming pairs.

Encourage the student to take their copy home and hang up so they can practice the poem regularly.

Complete the Rhyme Pages

This worksheet set includes two pages of practice exercises to complete the last word in each sentence of the poem. One page has the last word in dotted tracing lines, and the other page has the last word blank for the student to fill in.

Feel free to use whichever page works best for your group of students!

Match the Numbers to the Correct Picture Worksheet

This page in the printable pack instructs the student to draw a line matching the numbers to whichever picture it belongs to in the nursery rhyme. (1, 2 to image of a shoe, 3, 4 to image of a door, and so forth 🙂 )

Hen in the Chicken Coop Coloring Page

The printable pack includes a special coloring page for the student to enjoy. It includes a fun drawing of the famous big fat hen and her chicken coop.

This is a great activity to complete the nursery rhymes unit by encouraging thoughtful discussion of the poem. Talk through the different aspects of the song lyrics, what the child liked most about it, what words rhyme, etc. while the student works on coloring in the page.

Matching Game

Pages 6-8 include cards to cut out and play a matching game with your students. After reading through the poem a few times, give them these cards to independently match the correct numbers to pictures.

This is a great time to discuss the rhyming words in the poem while having a visual example in front of them.

Cards for Popsicle Stick Activity

This fun activity is located on pages 9-11 in the worksheet packet. There are 5 large cards to cut out with the pictures from the song on each one. I recommend doing this activity right after reading the poem for the first time and before singing it together as a class.

Have your students cut these out and glue each one to a popsicle stick. Then sing the song again and have students hold up the correct pictures for each part of the song.

The history of the One, Two Buckle My Shoe nursery rhyme

This nursery rhyme has been around since at least 1805, when Walter Crane put it in print form for the first time. (But researchers suspect that it is much older!). A similar rhyme can also be found in several other languages such as Italian, German, and Turkish. (source) There are several different versions of this song, and at one time it is believed that it went up to 30. (source) One of the special things about this nursery rhyme is that it has no historical references. It is simply a counting rhyme to help young children learn their numbers, while describing everyday work in the 18th century.

Other versions can include:

3, 4 knock at the door (or open the door)

9, 10 begin again (or a good fat hen)

  • Show students how to clap in rhythm along to the song lyrics
  • Use a snack as a game to count up to 10 while singing the song (fruit loops, fruit snacks, or goldfish are all great options!)
  • Teach the sign language signs for each word at the end of the sentence. These are really easy to find with a quick Google search and great skills for young children to learn.
